Blog Update: From Darwin to the West – NT Done, WA Begins!

Accessible Frontiers: Queensland

I’ve officially wrapped up my Northern Territory journey, and before heading into Western Australia, I wanted to share five standout experiences in Darwin that really impressed me—not just for what they offered, but how accessible and inclusive they were.

Whether you use a mobility aid, need flat surfaces, or just want to know what to expect before booking—here’s a quick recap of places that made exploring the Top End feel easier, safer, and more welcoming.

Hooked on Barra

Accessible Frontiers - Hooked on Barra

Located just outside of Darwin, Hooked on Barra is a land-based fishing experience with level casting decks, shaded areas, and full support from friendly guides. This is not your usual fishing tour—it’s designed so that anyone, whether you’re standing or seated, can have a go at catching one of their iconic barramundi. Everything is provided (rods, bait, instruction), and the experience is kept small and personal. It’s a great option if you want the thrill of fishing without the pressure or physical demands of being on a boat.

Walk Darwin – Walking Tour

Accessible Frontiers - Walk Darwin Tour

Walk Darwin offers heritage and cultural walking tours through the city, and they’ve clearly put thought into accessibility. Most of their tours take place on flat, paved paths with minimal to no stairs. They’re also able to adapt routes to avoid any uneven terrain or heat exposure, which is especially helpful in Darwin’s climate. Tours are relaxed in pace, and private bookings can even start from your hotel. You’ll want moderate fitness for these, as there’s limited seating, but the guides are experienced and very supportive.

Darwin Gourmet Food Tours

Accessible Frontiers - Darwin Gourmet Tours

If you’re after an experience that combines food, culture, and low-impact walking, Darwin Gourmet Tours is a must. This 4-hour tour includes visits to three award-winning restaurants, each with wheelchair access and accessible toilets. You’ll enjoy more than a dozen tasting plates, often featuring local bush foods, seafood, and native ingredients. The walk itself is under 1.5km on paved, flat surfaces, and the group is guided at a very slow, manageable pace. There’s also an added bonus—an augmented reality street art tour using a free mobile app or your guide’s tablet.

Crocosaurus Cove

Accessible Frontiers - Crocosaurus Cove

Right in the middle of the city, Crocosaurus Cove brings you up close to Australia’s most iconic reptiles—including 5-metre saltwater crocs. Whether you’re watching from the edge or joining a supervised experience like the Big Croc Encounter or Whipray Feeding, the entire venue is wheelchair accessible. Paths are wide and level, and the team does a great job of explaining safety procedures and supporting guests throughout each activity. Even if you’re not going into the Cage of Death (which has age and physical requirements), it’s still an incredibly immersive and inclusive visit.

Darwin Waterfront

Accessible Frontiers - Darwin Waterfront

The Darwin Waterfront is one of the most accessible precincts I’ve come across in the NT. There are wide, flat walkways throughout, ramp access to dining areas and retail outlets, and plenty of accessible public toilets—including Changing Places facilities. For water access, there’s a Mobi-mat and beach wheelchairs, making it possible to enjoy the wave lagoon or beach with extra support. The area is open and well-designed for all types of travellers—whether you’re exploring with family, mobility aids, or just want a scenic and comfortable stroll.
